Best Thing About This Recipe Is…
Aside from being easy to make and delicious? It fills your house with the scent of home. Also, this recipe tastes just as good if you are gluten-free – just substitute the same amount of gluten-free flour for the regular flour.
Ingredients
- 4 or 4 1/2 cups flour
- 2 Tbsp sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 4 Tbsp butter
- 1 cup raisins
- 1 large egg, lightly beaten
- 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
How To Make It!
1 First preheat oven to 425°. Then Put the flour, sugar, salt, and baking soda into a large mixing bowl and use a big wooden spoon to stir it up!!!
2 Using two knives, knead the butter into the flour mixture until it looks like the picture we took, then add in the raisins (if you like raisins – or you can leave them out).
3 This is the fun part! Make a well in the middle of the flour mixture. Pour the beaten egg and the buttermilk into your well and mix in with a wooden spoon until it’s hard to stir. Dust your hands with some flour, then gently knead the dough in the bowl just long enough to form a round ball. Don’t over-knead it! If the dough is too sticky to knead a little flour! In the bowl, shape it into a round loaf.
4 Put your dough into a large, lightly greased baking pan. Using a knife, make an X on top of dough about an inch deep. This helps the middle of the loaf to cook!
5 Put it in the oven and bake until golden, about 35-45 minutes. Check to see if it’s done by sticking a skewer into the center of the loaf. If it comes out clean, it’s done! If it’s not, cook it longer. If the top is getting too brown, put a tent of tin foil over the bread until it’s done baking. This will stop it from getting too brown!

We made this loaf substituting the same amount of gluten-free flour for the regular flour. Just as yummy!

For the gluten free loaf, what kind of flour did you use? This looks delicious!!
We actually used gluten-free “sandwich flour” – I’ll see if I can find the brand. It was really surprisingly delicious for gluten-free!
