This week’s Monday Listicles topic is 10 Things To Do With School. I’m still at Stinson beach since we don’t start school until Sept. 7th, so I’m putting off the back-to-school mode until – well, as long as possibly possible. So, 10 beachy things.
1. Driving over the mountain and seeing this view is one of my favorite things ever. I’ve been coming to this beach since I was six, and it’s the one place that feels like home. Nary a skyscraper in sight.
2. We stay in this box-shaped, simple beach house. Rustic! – it hasn’t been updated since the 60′s! It’s steps away from the beach, and we can ride bikes everywhere so we never have to get in the car. This place brings out the hippie in me.
3. Ella learned to stand on a surf board (and to lie down and be picked up on one by her surf teacher).
4. I got to spend some time with some of my wonderful friends and their children, and their dogs.
5. On the first day of surfing lessons, Surfer Dude here said, “You’re totally mellow,” and Fi looked at him like only an East Coaster can.
6. We unplug here, which means we get to do old fashioned things like talk to each other, walk on the beach, and build a house of cards.
7. My sister came out and spent some time with us – my kids could not get enough of their auntie.
8. Every day we’d ride bikes around the lagoon – it’s the most beautiful place. I think it’s because of the fresh air, and the way the fog rolls over the mountain.
9. My sister brought a layered salad that was our mother’s “signature dish” – I had forgotten about this salad! (I’ll soon post the recipe – it is amazing.)
10. I’ve been living on the East Coast now for nearly 8 years, and a couple of things happened that made me think I’m a little more EC and a little less Californian these days: first, I smushed a spider with my flip flop and the Californians who felt I should “rescue” the big, hairy fast-moving thing gasped (I felt a tinge of politically incorrectness), but the EC’ers cheered. (I’d do it again!) Then one morning I was cooking breakfast and asked if anyone wanted bacon, and someone said, “I’m anti-nitrates – I don’t do bacon.” Note: This same person asked for a plate of bacon after it was cooked – go figure!

So much fun. Glad you unplugged (and plugged back for this post). And your sister is a blonde version of you!
What a great anti-school list! You were making me miss CA. I’m a native an have only been on the EC 2 years. I hate the big bugs here. I’m not opposed to killing them but I don’t want to be the one to do it – Ewww. And now I just found out the 17 year cicadas are coming next year, gah!! I did that once already in grad school and was kind of hoping for a once in a lifetime experience there…
Now I wish I’d had a relaxing beach trip with my family before the start of the school year. This looks like so much fun!
I loved reading your tweets about surf lessons! Glad you had a fun time!
I love this post — Stinson Beach is one of my favorite places anywhere, and I haven’t been there for years and years. Thank you for taking me back!!
Nice post about Stinson beach! Can’t wait for the layered salad recipe! BTW I created a Facebook group for the moms from the Moms Who Write and Blog Pinterest board. Let’s come together and share our ideas, rant and rave,…show off our blog posts, and funny wacky pins… Writing can be lonely, kids can be a challenge, and blogging is our saving grace (and sometimes our burden). Looks like a fabulous vacation..still on vacation. I do hope to learn to surf some day and am quite jealous your girls are already enjoying it!
Looks like a wonderful time. Hope you enjoy the rest of your vacation!
That looks fabulous! Love that little beach house. We just got back from a long weekend at our friends’ beach cabin. No cell service, no urgency, just relaxed fun.
I love Stinson Beach too and could so easily imagine living there with my bicycle & uncombed hair & fuzzy socks tucked into birkenstocks…bliss. Plus of course, it being Northern Cali, the food is most excellent pretty much everywhere you go. I’m breathing deeply, pretending I can smell the ocean and the woodsy hills wafting off the screen…
That is borderline republican *gasp* . Love the adventures your girls have! Surfer instructors are the new tennis instructors ha? Clever mama!

I’m a Jew who eats bacon and a an arachnophobe who kills spiders. Do I get extra points? I do love the hard edged cynicism of the East Coast, but I’d like to take it with a side fresh California veggies. I love your pictures – it does feel like a throw back to another time.
YES, YOU GET POINTS! (-: Ha!
“I’m anti-nitrates.” Hilarious.
This looks like a whole lot of fun. I hope you’ve had a great summer.
