The Boy With Tourettes

This morning I was waiting in this hallway for my daughter’s music class to finish.

hallway2It is a quiet waiting area with “Quiet please!” signs everywhere. I love quiet places and was settling in to read my book when this teen boy arrived and sat on the floor with his laptop. He kept tapping his mouse on the floor loudly and kept doing it and kept doing it. Eventually I got annoyed and craned my neck to give him my stink-eye but thankfully he couldn’t see me. The man beside him got annoyed and said something. Then the boy eloquently and calmly explained that he had Tourette’s syndrome and how he tapped his mouse so he wouldn’t shout words and disturb us all.

I was humbled.

Everyone in that hallway was humbled by this boy’s eloquence and grace.

After that he kept tapping – but none of us heard it anymore. (-:

    • Yes, and to pause before I judge someone or get annoyed. Every time, to pause. I think I’ll remember that boy…forever. Hopefully.

  5. Oh my! Exactly, what an amazing reminder that one should never judge others so quickly, even when they seem extremely rude…Easier said than done though.

  6. A great example for the importance of understanding and tolerance, you never know what stories can stand behind a person, you mustn’t judge them…
