The Ambassade Hotel: Best Hotel In Amsterdam

Filed under: Travel, Traveling with Children

On our trip to Amsterdam with the kids we wanted to stay at an anti-chain hotel, one with character, that’s centrally located overlooking a canal, and that’s very friendly to children. We wanted a hotel that felt entirely Dutch. We found all these things and more at The Ambassade Hotel. I’ve stayed at some amazing hotels in my lifetime, and for me The Ambassade ranks among my top three favorites (the other two: The Balmoral in Scotland, and Waterford Castle in Ireland). The tag line at The Ambassade: ”You dream, you wake up…the dream continues.”

Yep, that about sums it up!

This gem of a hotel consists of several 17th c. houses merged together, so you really feel like even though you’re in a hotel, you are still experiencing the real Amsterdam. It’s overlooking a canal. The furnishings were amazing (see above!). This is the view out of our windows:

The staff is extremely friendly, and they go out of their way to be helpful (and all of them speak English). They gave us an incredible two story room overlooking the canal. It had a tiny steep staircase and a turreted bedroom at the top. Here are some photos:
To get to our room there were lots of little staircases and winding hallways to explore.

A typical Dutch breakfast is bread with meat or cheese on it. Delicious!

I got to do an hour-long float in their spa's flotation tank. It feels like you are floating weightless through the whole universe. Yes, I know that sounds strange but it does. (Unless you are claustrophobic.)

Another shot of the breakfast room. Fi and I just felt so...civilized, eating there.

Thank you, Ambassade Hotel, for an amazing three days. In the words of Arnold Shwarzenegger, “I’ll be back!”
